INTRODUCTION

|

Mizoram is situated in the North
East corner of the country. The
general topography is steep hill
ranges running North South
throughout the State. The capital
city of Aizawl is built on a cluster
of steep hillocks with loose soils.
Without proper land-use bye laws,
the city had grown to an enormous
hazard zone with lots of vulnerable
multistoried buildings sprouting in
all places. The State is
experiencing numerous land sinking,
landslide and earth cracking,
endangering the very habitation in
the city and in other settlements.
Besides these hazards, the State is
annually receiving the onslaught of
monsoon in the form of cyclonic
storms, hailstorms and excessive
rainfall which usually affected the
very developmental process.
The lives and the progress of
development is all the more put at
greater risk by the knowledge that
Mizoram is among the top most
seismically susceptible to severe
earthquake.
The Govt of Mizoram is indeed
grateful to the Govt of India and
the UNDP for their initiative in
helping the State to formulate
programmes and plans for
preparedness, mitigation and other
activities under the Disaster
Management Programme |
